Using AI to Find Plot Holes Before Your Readers Do
AI is a tireless continuity reader. Learn how to prompt it to find plot holes in logic, timelines, motivation, and setups and payoffs without letting it fix anything for you.
You know the feeling. You've finished a draft, you're proud of it, and then a reader emails: "Wait, how did she have the key in chapter nineteen when she dropped it in the river in chapter four?" Your stomach drops, because they're right, and now you have to untangle a thread you wove forty thousand words ago. By the time a reader catches a plot hole, it's already cost you something.
Catching them yourself is hard because you're too close. You know what you meant, so your brain auto-fills the gaps. The four kinds of holes to hunt
Don't ask "find my plot holes" and call it done. That gets you a vague, surface-level pass. Hunt each category deliberately, because each needs a different prompt.
1. Logic and causation
These are the "that wouldn't actually happen" holes. A character acts in a way the situation doesn't support, or an event has no real cause.
Read this section. List every place where something happens that isn't sufficiently set up or caused by what came before. For each, quote the moment and tell me what's missing. Don't suggest fixes, just find the gaps.
The "quote the moment" instruction matters. It forces the model to point at real text instead of inventing problems, and it makes its claims checkable.
2. Timeline and continuity
The river-key problem. Objects, injuries, locations, who-knows-what-when, days of the week, ages, the weather.
Build a timeline of this manuscript: every time-marker, every object a character gains or loses, every injury, and who knows which secret at each point. Then flag any contradiction. Show your work as a table.
Asking for a table is the trick. It forces the model to externalize its reasoning so you can audit it, and it catches the dropped key because the key shows up in one column and not the next.
3. Motivation
The subtlest and most damaging kind. A character does something the rest of the book says they'd never do, because the plot needed it. Readers feel these even when they can't name them.
For my protagonist, list every major decision she makes and whether it's consistent with what we know about her wants and fears. Flag any choice that seems driven by plot convenience rather than character. Ask me a question about each flagged one.
Motivation holes are where a strong character readers believe quietly falls apart, so this pass is worth running on every point-of-view character, not just the lead.
4. Setups and payoffs
The promises you made and didn't keep, and the payoffs that arrived without setup. The gun on the mantel that never fires; the rescue that comes from a skill the character never had.
List every setup, hint, or promise this draft makes to the reader (a planted object, a foreshadowed event, an unanswered question). For each, tell me whether it's paid off, where, or note that it's dangling.
A draft full of dangling setups feels unsatisfying even when readers can't articulate why. This pass surfaces every loose thread so you can decide which to pay off and which to cut.
A workflow that keeps you in charge
Here's the order that works, with the guardrail built in.
- Feed it real, complete context. Holes hide between chapters, so a model working off one scene will miss the cross-references. Give it the whole manuscript or large coherent chunks, plus your story bible if you have one, so it knows the rules it's checking against.
- Run one category at a time. Logic, then timeline, then motivation, then setups. A single "find everything" prompt produces a shallow list. Separate passes go deep.
- Demand quotes and locations. Every flagged hole must point to real text. This kills hallucinated problems and makes each claim something you can verify in thirty seconds.
- Verify before you believe. Models invent contradictions that aren't there. Treat every flag as a lead, not a verdict. Go read the actual lines.
- Fix it yourself. Once you've confirmed a real hole, close the AI response and solve it in your own words, fitting your own story. The repair is a craft decision and it stays yours.

The most useful mode isn't "list my holes" at all. It's making the model interrogate you about your own plot, so you catch the holes by explaining them.
